Our eight modes of dominant creativity, like our four identity archetypes, evolved for a purpose. That purpose was to bind us together in cohesive, cooperative groups.
Where ancient humans moved into areas with more abundant resources, larger hunter-gatherer bands formed. This presented their members with new challenges: negotiating more numerous and complex social ties, and creating the more sophisticated tools and shelter needed by a larger band.
These new challenges gave rise to Nymphs and Satyrs with new modes of dominant creativity, at intermediate levels of primary energy:
Fighting (assertive protection)
Hunting (effective provision)
Dancing (spiritual celebration)
Singing (emotional expression)
Painting (meaningful representation)
Crafting (practical creation)
Gathering (nourishing collection)
Tending (nurturing supervision)
Why did these new modes of dominant creativity evolve? It has to do with the Feminine and the Masculine:
- The Feminine is about relationship, so women whose Feminine energy is more intense (Dancing, Singing, Painting) could help manage the more complex social relationships that exist in larger bands.
- The Masculine is about strength, so women whose Masculine energy is more intense (Fighting) could help protect the band from other bands’ incursions while men are away on the hunt.
- Men with Masculine energy at an intermediate level of intensity (Dancing, Singing) can fight and hunt, of course. Their natural strengths, however, lie in bringing the band together through social activities. These types of men could also prevent conflict within the band because they’re not inclined to vie with its Fighting members for leadership.
- Men whose Masculine energy isn’t as intense (Painting, Crafting) are more patient and careful than other men. This could help them create the artifacts that distinguish larger bands: beautiful works of art, and technologically sophisticated tools and shelter.
Why, among the 16 general types, are there no Hunting or Crafting Nymphs? Women hunt and craft in larger bands, but few have their dominant creativity in Hunting and Crafting.
Why are there no Gathering or Tending Satyrs? Men gather and tend in larger bands, but few have their dominant creativity in Gathering and Tending.
